MEDICAL MODULE
1. Altitude, Oxygen & Acclimatization Protocols
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) occurs due to reduced barometric pressure and fewer oxygen molecules per breath above 2,800 meters. On expeditions such as Ladakh or Spiti, we will ascend from 3,500m in Leh to over 5,300m at passes including Khardung La and Chang La.
Golden Rules of Altitude Safety:
- 48 Hours Rest in Leh (3,500m): Our itinerary guarantees active rest on Days 1 and 2. No strenuous exercise or immediate high-altitude rides.
- Daily Pulse Oximeter Checks: Every morning and evening, the expedition lead checks each rider’s blood oxygen (SpO2) and heart rate.
- Medical Oxygen Onboard: The 4x4 backup vehicle carries medical oxygen cylinders and full trauma/altitude emergency medical kits.
- Hydration Discipline: Drink 4 to 5 liters of water daily. High dry air dehydrates quickly. Strictly avoid alcohol and heavy caffeine during the first 3 days.
- Acetazolamide (Diamox): Consult your physician prior to travel. A prophylactic dose (125mg every 12 hours) started 24h before landing in Leh significantly accelerates pulmonary acclimatization.
