OFFLINE EXPEDITION MODE
Emergency Protocol
Read this before you need it. In an emergency: stop, breathe, assess. This page works without signal — keep it downloaded.
The first five minutes
- Stop riding. Move yourself off the traffic line if you can; leave the bike where it lies if moving it risks injury.
- Breathe and check yourself: airway, bleeding, conscious. Head and spine injuries mean DO NOT MOVE the rider unless there is immediate danger (fire, traffic, falling rock).
- Check the group. Assign one person to stay with the casualty and one to ride for help — never send both.
- Note your location: last kilometre marker, pass name, GPS from any phone that still has a signal, or the day stage from your offline pack.
- Activate the satellite communicator if issued. One press = check-in; hold SOS = emergency response centre.
Situation protocols
Medical emergency
- Do not remove the helmet unless the airway is blocked.
- Altitude sickness that stops a rider sleeping or walking = descend tonight. Do not wait for morning.
- The guide carries the group medical kit and the evacuation numbers. Your job is stabilisation and information, not diagnosis.
Mechanical failure
- Stop at a safe wide point, well off the traffic line. Signal the riders behind.
- Small problem: fix with the tool roll. Do not improvise repairs you are not sure of — a bodge that fails at 5,000 m becomes an emergency.
- Bike immobile: the guide and the support vehicle carry spares. Wait with the bike if it is safe; the sweep rider will reach you.
Accident
- Secure the scene first — oncoming traffic is the second accident. Post a rider upstream of the incident.
- Casualty assessment before bike recovery. Machines can be replaced.
- Photograph the scene only once people are safe — for insurance and the incident report.
Lost / off route
- Rule one: STOP. Riding further on a wrong track is how a wrong turn becomes a missing rider.
- Check the offline pack GPX and the day stage map. Backtrack to the last confirmed point.
- If the track is uncertain and the day is late: stay put, shelter, make yourself visible. The convoy will trace the route from the last checkpoint.
Road blocked
- Landslide, water crossing, or army closure: do not cross moving water above ankle depth and never cross a fresh landslide alone.
- Report the blockage to the guide with your position. RIE re-routes the convoy — the route is a plan, not a contract.
- Wait at the last safe point where the support vehicle can still reach you.
